Week in Review Edition - Week 1

Hello everybody and welcome to the week in review edition!

This is something a little different to the other current editions of the blog running as this will be a once weekly blog where I talk about a couple of news stories from the previous 7 days.

Firstly let me say congratulations!!!!

For what? Well you survived!!!

Ok don't worry I didn't take a hit out on you or something crazy. It was actually Ragnarök the viking prediction of the end of civilization.

Now I don't know about you but after all the previous end of the worlds I have been through I feel like a hardened veteran; in my biopic film based on the survival of these events I see myself played by Mark Whalberg or Jermey Renner rough around the edges and cold from the horrors I have seen (Mainly the central line tube station in rush hour).

Obviously I don't place any stock in these predictions especially those of barbarians from 793 AD!
It would be interesting to talk to the people from these cultures who so fervently believed the world would end on a certain date.

Of course a large majority of these apocalyptic predictions were based in religion, I think however as we have developed over the years and entered into the internet age we have become more cynical as a race.

So if the pope was to come out and say "The world will end in 2021!" I think a large majority of people would scoff at this and within hours the likes of reddit and 4chan would be flooded with pope memes.

My favourite part of Ragnarök is where the giant snake Jormungund that encircles the world rises from the sea and eats the sun. Classic.

I might go to a cave and scribble the world ends in 2637 in permanent marker just to troll the future.

On a much more serious note one of the main stories that has dominated the news over recent weeks is the government situation in Ukraine.

Over the past few years we have seen an uprising in the people challenging their government and demanding change which I think is fantastic!

It is sickening that people have had to lose their lives protesting against their own government but it seems that it might all coming to a head and their loss wont have been in vein.

If you have seen the headlines on this story or havnt heard about it at all let me give you the brief recap!

November 2004 It is annouced that Viktor Yanukovych has won the presidential election. Viktor Yanukovych is seen as "In russias pocket". There is wide spread allegations of corruption and rigged votes, the supreme court annuls the result of the poll.

December 2004 In the election re-run opposition candiate Viktor Yushchenko tops the polls, Viktor Yanukovych challanges the result and resigns as prime minister.

Feburary 2010 Viktor Yanukovych is declared the winner in the presidential election. His main rival, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, claims corruption and is later arrested on "politically motivated charges".

Novemeber 2013 President Yanukovych annouces the abandonment of a deal that would strengthen ties with the EU and instead is looking to co operate more with Russia. A bill is also rejected allowing jailed  Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to be set free and exiled instead.

Protests begin that same night and ramp up over the coming months with protesters occupying government buildings and independece square leading to ultimatly fatal clashes with riot police.

Anti protest laws are passed in an attempt to disperse the crowds and are soon annuled after being labeled "draconian"

On Feburary 21st President Yanukovych signs a compromise deal to form a new government and to hand power back to parliment with elections held by December.

The people demand for the elections to be held in may and protests continue. President Yanukovych is nowhere to be seen.

Olexander Turchynov is named as interim president in Yanukovychs absence and tells MPs they have until tuesday to form a new government.

How Yanukovych was able to get into the presidency a second time is absolutely mind boggling to me! Then to go out and do exactly what the people had suspicisons of seems like you're asking for trouble.

It has been a turbulent few months for Ukraine but it looks like change may be on the horizon but with 77 people killed and hundreds more injured in protests in the last 3 days alone something needs to happen quickly.

Now onto some other big headline news but for different reasons.

Facebook has recently aquired whatsapp for over 19 billion dollars!

An absolute crazy amount of money for what seems like just a messaging service but that isnt even the bit that interested me the most!

The part I found funny was that original founder of whatsapp Brian Acton actually applied for a job at Facebook before he made whatsapp and got rejected! I bet they are kicking themselves for their billion dollar mistake now!

Also a little bit embarasing is that soon after Facebook bought whatsapp it stopped working!
Not the best start! They apologized and said there were server issues and rectified the problem.

Finally I want to leave you with a little a video I found funny.

The uprising is coming everyone..... be afraid.....be very afraid!
